Aesthetic Dentistry (Cosmetic)

Dental Implant Solutions Smiling Woman in Chair"Cosmetic" or aesthetic dentistry can give you healthy, radiant teeth. We prefer the term "aesthetic" over "cosmetic" dentistry as cosmetic implies the procedure is done for appearance only. Aesthetic dentistry is done with the idea that form follows function and when teeth are restored properly, not only does the appearance improve, but the function, longevity, and durability are enhanced.

With state-of-the-art materials, and tried and true dental techniques, aesthetic dentistry improves appearance and enhances self-esteem. Teeth can become broken, worn, stained, or even lost over a person's lifetime for a variety of reasons. It's important to remember that we only get one set of adult teeth-all present at the age of 12. In order for them to last a lifetime, some maintenance (let's start with brushing and flossing!) is necessary. Regular professional cleanings and checkups can help you understand how to care properly for your teeth and identify breakdown or potential problems before symptoms occur. With minimally invasive techniques and "biomimetic" restorations (fillings or crowns that mimic the natural properties of tooth structure), you can maintain your ability to smile and chew for a lifetime.

Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening, as the name implies, is a process for making your smile brighter and more attractive. Over the counter lightening products (White strips) will lighten teeth effectively, but are messier than professional whitening trays and may not lighten as much as the products your dentist can provide. "One day" lightening has been shown to be no more effective in the long term than take home professional trays and lightening agents. There is an initial "pop" mostly because the in-office one day technique dehydrates the teeth which makes them appear whiter. Take home trays are still prescribed and likely provide most of the long term benefit. Learn more about your teeth whitening options here.

Cosmetic Bonding
Cosmetic bonding rebuilds chips and fills in gaps with a resin that can be colored to blend with the surrounding teeth. The bonding adheres directly to the surface of the tooth, and is hardened in place with bright visible light. Cosmetic bonding is a good option when there is a small amount of tooth structure to be replaced or restored. If the damage or attrition is more extensive, composite bonding may discolor or break and porcelain restorations provide a better result. Learn more about bonding here...

Crowns
Dr. Grote often uses crowns for restoring severely decayed or fractured teeth. First, Dr. Grote will remove the damaged portion of the tooth, and shape it to receive a crown. Then, an impression (mold) or a digital scan is taken and used to manufacture a crown out of gold or porcelain to fit the healthy tooth. The crown is then fixed into place with special cement or bonding material. Dental crowns provide the following benefits:
•  They restore the tooth's original shape and size
•  They help prevent decay from forming on the underlying tooth
•  They add strength to the tooth's structure
•  They are very durable

Dental crowns help prevent the need for root canals and tooth extraction by reducing the risk of tooth fracture and tooth decay. Learn more about dental crowns here...

Porcelain Veneers
Dental veneers are custom crafted porcelain laminates fitted by a dentist over the front of an existing tooth. They bond directly to the front of the tooth, dramatically enhancing its shape, color and appearance. Porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable, very durable, and an effective way to improve smile appearance. Learn more about veneers...
